Parents and birth attendants can influence, but not control how a birth unfolds. Birthing From Within is a soulful and holistic approach that gives parents the tools to birth naturally and to birth-in-awareness when the journey takes unexpected turns.
BFW classes are unlike any other childbirth classes. Parents learn lots of practical information through thought-provoking dialogues, interesting videos, and memorable exercises.
Class by class, parents practice and master a variety of proven pain-coping exercises and build their pain-coping confidence. They also explore the wise and compassionate use of drugs and epidurals.
. . . and because dads and birth companions need support too. They will experience birth from their perspective. BFW classes include a special class just for Dads and birth-companions.
Birthing From Within mentors (teachers) believe that childbirth is a profound rite of passage, not a medical event (even when medical care is part of the birth). We teach parents the power of birthing-in-awareness, even when their birth experience is not what they had anticipated. We create a safe, nurturing class environment which will invite parents to discover their personal strength and wisdom. We balance practical, useful information with introspective, multi-sensory experiences.
We teach about birth from four perspectives: mother, father, baby and culture.
We help parents build a pain-coping mindset so they may fully participate in birth's rite of passage.
We know that Birthing From Within classes are not the end, but the beginning of a parent's journey.
#1 Childbirth is a profound rite of passage, not a medical event (even when medical care is part of the birth).
#2 The essence of childbirth preparation is self-discovery, not assimilating obstetric information.
#3 The teacher (mentor) is "midwife" to the parents' discovery process, not the expert from whom wisdom flows.
#4 Childbirth preparation is a continually evolving process (for parents and teachers), not a static structure of techniques and knowledge.
#5 Parents' individual needs and differences determine class content.
#6 Active, creative self-expression is critical to childbirth preparation.
#7 The purpose of childbirth preparation is to prepare mothers to give birth-in-awareness, not to achieve a specific birth outcome.
#8 Pregnancy and birth outcome are influenced by a variety of factors, but can't be controlled by planning.
#9 In order to help parents mobilize their coping resources, it is critical for childbirth classes to acknowledge that unexpected, unwelcome events may happen during labor.
#10 Parents deserve support for any birth option which might be right for them (whether it be drugs, technology, home birth, or bottle-feeding).
#11 Pain is an inevitable part of childbirth, yet much can be done to ease suffering.
#12 Pain coping practices work best when integrated into daily life, rather than "dusted off" for labor.
#13 Father help best as birth guardians or loving partners, not as coaches; they also need support.
#14 For parents, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a time of continuous learning and adjustment; holistic support and education should be available throughout that period.
#15 Childbirth preparation is also parenting preparation.
