I seriously do not know what I would do without my slow cooker. It is literally a life saver. I love being able to go for a walk or hang out with my family during the evening witching hour instead of trying to get dinner made. But there are more reasons to use a slow cooker other than not having to scramble to make dinner every night. Read on for my top 5 reasons for cooking with a slow cooker:
They are great for beginners. You just need to know how to chop veggies and meat. The whole reason I started cooking with my slow cooker, even before I started experimenting with freezer cooking, was because I didn’t know how to cook anything else. It is the perfect intro into the kitchen for people who have no idea how to cook.
It uses less energy than an oven. It’s a great way to reduce your energy consumption in the kitchen by not using your oven. If you get down to the nitty gritty of watt usage per hour of the oven versus the slow cooker, it’s not an huge reduction of energy, but if you factor in how hot the oven makes your kitchen and how it makes the AC in your house work harder to cool it down, and that when you use your oven you are often using lots of different pots and pans and thus it takes more energy to wash them in the dishwasher, unlike with a slow cooker it’s a one pot meal, which means only one pot to clean!
Stews are easily digestible. The kind of food that comes out of a slow cooker is easier to digest and retains more nutrients because it has been cooked slow and low.
It saves money. The slow cooker can turn a cheap piece of meat into something mouthwatering.
It saves time. Oh, this is the best part. It saves so much time! Especially if you are thinking and preparing a little ahead and using my slow cooker freezer recipes. That way you can chop and assemble a month’s worth of meals in under two hours and then the day you want to have dinner done and ready, you just pull out a bag of food from the freezer and dump it into the slow cooker and forget about it.
