Natural Remedies for Fever, Stuffy Nose, and Ear Infection

Over the years my homeopathic remedy cabinet has grown. Each time a new illness pops up I learn how to treat with homeopathy. Very quickly it became my go to way to treat anything. I think that very rarely do people need antibiotics, I am talking a handful of times in your lifetime, not a handful of times per year. Antibiotics do so much damage to your body, even if they do make you feel better temporarily. You want your body to learn how to heal itself.  And if you are constantly are popping pain meds and antibiotics your body will greatly reduce and even loose it’s ability to fight illness. Your body is amazing and has the ability to heal itself from anything. As Hippocrates says, give me a medicine that creates a fever, and I can cure any disease.

With back to school time around the corner, and all the lovely back to school germs and virus sharing that comes along with it. I thought I would give you a bit of a round up of all my natural remedy posts and some more information to help you integrate this in your lifestyle and home.

The most common childhood illness are fever, stuffy nose and ear infections. Which by the way if your child has chronic ear infections it probably from cervical vertebrae being out of alignment and a severe imbalance in the gut flora of your child’s digestive system (read this post of mine about probiotics and/or the GAPS Diet book to learn more about the gut flora imbalance).

When Penelope gets sick, which is honestly, super, super rare, despite her Sensory Processing Disorder issues, her immune system has always been amazing.  I attribute that to a good diet, and no vaccinations.  But here is what I do when she does get sick:

*Let the fever do it’s thing.  I will let it get to 103-105 before I start treating it with natural remedies. Peppermint oil rubbed on the feet and a tepid bath are my go to ways to bring a fever down a couple of points. If that doesn’t work (it always has) I have Children’s Pain Reliver liquid spray from King Bio Homeopathic. I do also have dye-free Tylenol on hand for emergencies.

*Up supplements.  Penelope always takes a multivitamin, probiotics, and cod liver oil.  When is under the weather I up her cod liver oil, vitamin C and vitamin D and give her some echinacea.  You can read this post to learn more about the supplements I like for both her and I.

*Clear the bowels.  You and your kid should be pooping two to three times a day, even babies – I don’t know how and why the misinformation spread that it is ok for a baby to go a week without pooping if they are breastfed – that is never ok!  When you are detoxing or sick, you want to get it out of your body, and biggest way your body get rid of waste is by pooping, so make sure your child is not constipated.  I like these gentle laxatives and digestive enzymes for kids and this tea and supplement for me when I need to move it, move it!  And get a Squatty Potty, it will help you get all your poop out each time you go to the bathroom and not leave any to rot in your colon-and you’ll have a flatter stomach to boot.

*GOOT!  Oh, how I love me some GOOT.  Miracle of miracles, that stuff is amazing.  Fevers, ear infections, stuffy nose, sinus infection, you name it.  Put some GOOT on it.  It’s the natural and healthy version of windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

*Alternative Wellness. Get thy self and your baby to a chiropractor, acupuncture Dr and/or a homeopath.  As you start relying on these practitioners for your health needs and as you increase your intuition about what your body needs and what your child needs you will be able to feel in your body what is out of balance and which one you need to go to for each little illness.

Pink eye can also go around quickly during back to school time, so you might also want to book mark my natural remedy for pink eye and styes. And if you catch what your kid brings home from school and are super stuffed up with a head cold check out my post about the Netti Pot and other cold remedies.  Cupping therapy is also fantastic tool for both parent and child when you have a stuffy nose and fever. And remember when it’s cooler weather, wearing a scarf is a great preventative from catching a cold.

I also really like Hyland’s Kid Kit. It includes:

Aconitum Napellus 30X: Initial stages of fevers and inflammations brought about by exposure to dry cold, with anxiety, restlessness and thirst. Discontinue when perspiration sets in.

Arnica Montana 30X: Muscular soreness due to overexertion. The first remedy for swelling, bruising and shock. An athlete’s necessity.

Belladonna 30X: Sudden onset of violent symptoms characterized by flushing heat, and throbbing pain. Patient may have sore throat, cough, aches and fever.

Chamomilla 30X: Hypersensitivity to pain, rheumatic discomfort, sleeplessness and nervous excitability. Relieves colic and teething distress in children.

Ferrum Phos 30X: Ferrum Phos helps the lungs to distribute oxygen throughout the body. It helps carry the oxygen in the circulatory system and is useful for inflammations (sore throat, stuffy nose), nosebleeds or muscular strains. For first aid, fevers and first stage of inflammations, Ferrum Phos is your remedy.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum 30X: Helps to localize inflammation, as in bringing a boil to a head. Also of value in treating croup, certain head colds, sore throats and laryngitis.

And then once you are feeling better, stay healthy and increase of vitality of your immune system with these ten healthy habits that I do.

    my medicine cabinet has grown the same way – over time, with a little experience and a little research. but there are some new-to-me ones here that i’m stoked to add to the pile.

    question for you. my one year old hasn’t been pooping regularly since she started eating solids routinely – which has only been a month or so. she only consumes breastmilk (and plenty of it!) and real, whole foods (not “baby food”, not processed food etc) but for the last few weeks, since her interest/intake in solids has really ramped up, her poops went from hard (straining – ugh) and infrequent to really infrequent.

    i never experienced this with my four year (who nursed –still does!– and was slower to solids, ate real foods etc too) old so i’m in uncharted territory here!

    i tried a little diluted prune juice (even though i would never ordinarily give a pasteurized juice to her) just to see if that age-old trick helped. she didn’t like it enough to have more than a sip or two so it didn’t do anything.

    last week she ate a little watermelon and that got things moving in a big way (yesss!) but since then, nothing. and she won’t revisit watermelon, either.

    do you have any tips you can pass my way?! you’re just the mama whose advice i’d trust!! xx

    • Glad you liked the post. Before I can help, I need a little bit more info, what foods is your one year old eating? Is she still breastfeeding?

        okay, she’s totally still breastfeeding. on cue – so, lots! and she eats avocado, beans (soaked, made at home), salmon, rice (soaked though not sprouted – shame! made at home), vegetables (zukes, green beans, sweet potato, spinach, broccoli), fruit (cantaloupe, honeydew, berries – though she’s not as into fruit) and she has had the occasional nibble of bread. sigh. i didn’t give my little boy any wheat until he was about two but this time around i didn’t quite make it that far. though she has consumed it in very, very small quantity.

        i take a multi-vitamin, vitamin d, a high quality probiotic and DHA, and plenty of coconut oil. my diet’s not immaculate (i know i eat too much grain) but i am at least aware of where i can improve! i know what’s up (for the most part!) with food… i just need to put it into practice more.

        i have been off dairy for some time and am off eggs because she seemed to have a sensitivity to them in the breastmilk (same for my son). but i started eating them again when he was one (pastured eggs) and he was fine with it and began eating them himself shortly thereafter. i plan to start eating them again myself soon to make sure she can tolerate them in my milk then i’ll give them to her as well if all systems are go as i anticipate they will be.

        i stopped taking my fermented COL because they seemed to upset her tummy when she was a baby (could have been – and probably was – an unrelated coincidence) and just started them again with no problem.

        i haven’t been giving her probiotics directly but need to, clearly.

        i remineralize my RO water with “concentrace” minerals and i know they can have a laxative effect and had pondered using them for her… but haven’t yet.

        i was hoping peaches and plums would do the trick but she doesn’t really like them enough to eat them in any significant quantity.

        • I would cut out the bread, the beans and the rice and see what happens. I would also eat lots of prunes myself to get them into the breastmilk and see if that helps. And yup, give her probiotics! She could also probably do a children’s chewable digestive aid or laxative.

  2. I love this post! Here’s my story (briefly): I’m wanting to start using homeopathic remedies in my home withy daughter and myself. I’m in the VERY beginning stages of researching so this post is really helpful. I do have a question: My daughter, who just turned two, is not having bowel movements like she should be-to the point that I’m having to give her Miralax (prescribed by her pediatrician) every two weeks for four days at a time. I’m over this! There has to be a better way! You mentioned probiotic and laxatives-what do you recommend? Also, is there somewhere on the Internet that is kind of an all-inclusive information place for those of us who are SO TIRED of doctors just wanting to pump our kids full of medication!?

  3. Hey Stephanie! Great post and so helpful too! My 8 month old poops once a week (if that) and has since right around 3 months old. I EP for her and we do solids here and there. I only feed her fruits and veggies (all organic). I tried doing raw egg yolk, but unfortunately she is really sensitive to egg so I’m holding off until she’s a bit older. The link for the digestive enzymes and laxatives for kids didn’t go through on your post. Can you send me the link to those? I eat as healthy as I possibly can and try to stick to WAPF diet. However, I do have processed grains and bread here and there. Do you think that might have something to do with it? I am fairly new to the real food movement, so any help would be great. Is there anything else I can do to help her along?

    • Yeah, the more I learn about grains, even if they are soaked, are really, really hard to digest for adults and kids. I think grains are the culprit for a lot of digestive issues.

    My daughter is 5 weeks old, diagnosed with acid reflux. I started out BF but didn’t know that my diet was probably the main issue. Im weaning her quickly from meds because I realized for harmful they are. She is now formula fed. At the moment, she seems ok with formula, although she cries and squirms at moments. It seems to be tummy distress. Ive tried gripe water, gas drops etc. I’m torn between trying to feed her goats milk with probiotics or organic formula with probiotics. She stays with friends and family during the week so I need a feeding method that is “user friendly”. Any help would be great. Im desperate. I’ve gathered that she got off to a bad start an I want to build her gut health back up.

    • Read the probiotics post I did a few weeks ago, that will help a lot. raw goats milk is a great option if you think she has a dairy allergy. or homemade raw milk formula is a great option too.

  6. Can you take smooth move while nursing?

    • You can. You don’t want to overdo it and use it as a detoxification tactic (because what you detox will leave your body through your milk and be dumped into your baby!) but if you are just constipated and wanted to drink the tea to help with your constipation then that is fine.

    We just found out our 3 month old son has an e.coli microorganism in his bladder. The doctor has prescribed a round of antibiotics. Do you know of any natural remedies of UTIs?

    • Aw, poor baby! If you are breastfeeding him, you could increase your intake of garlic, cranberries, pineapple, and vitamin c to help give his body what he needs through your breastmilk to help him fight it off. And you might want to also cut out all grains, dairy and sugar. There is some research that correlates bacteria growth in other parts of the body, with overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut. Adding probiotics is always a good idea too. Hope he feels better soon!
