Some people have asked me what my favorite and absolute must-have essential oils are, so I thought I would do a little post to share and explain.
I have used Young Living Essential oils since 2005. I have tried regular store bought essential oils, and I can really see the difference in Young Living, they are much more potent and effective (although truthfully much more expensive too). I have not tried Do Terra oils either, but I know those are very well made and popular as well.
My top 3 favorites are actually blends. Thieves, Peace and Calming and Gentle Baby.
When I first started using Young Living essential oils, I was a nanny full time and running a yoga studio that I owned. My most pressing needs were keeping my immune system up and working so I could manage to work 100 hours a week (that is not a typo, that is truly how many hours a week I worked when I had my studio and was a full time nanny-it was insane!), keeping my stress level down, and keeping the two Irish twins I was a nanny to calm and happy.
Thieves was created based on research about four thieves in France who covered themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims. This proprietary essential oil blend was universally praised for its cleansing abilities. It is highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health. It’s made up of clove , lemon, cinnamon, Eucalyptus and rosemary.
I keep some in the bathroom and add a drop after I wash my hands. I have also made up a antibacterial spray that I take in my purse or the car. To make it, I put 30 drops of thieves in a spray bottle like this, two tablespoons of aloe vera gel, and fill the rest of with water. I got the idea from this great blog.
Peace & Calming is a gentle, fragrant blend. When diffused, it helps calm tensions and uplift the spirit, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace. When massaged on the bottoms of the feet, it can be a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night’s rest. Peace & Calming may be especially calming and comforting to young children after an overactive and stressful day.
I use this on the bottoms of my feet before I go to bed, or if I need an instant anger or stress diffuser, I put some on my inner wrists (and take a couple of deep breaths too). And on Penelope’s feet if she is having a hard time winding down from her day. When she was still napping and the babies I was a nanny too, I would put it on their feet as part of their before nap, winding down routine.
Gentle Baby is a soft, fragrant combination of essential oils designed specifically for mothers and babies. It helps calm emotions during pregnancy and is useful for quieting troubled little ones. It is also soothing to tender skin. Many of the essential oils in this blend are used in elite cosmetics to enhance a youthful appearance.
Oh, how I love this blend. Nothing gives me more joy than teaching an infant massage class and getting to massages little babies or kids. Rubbing this blend on the feets of babies or kids, will instantly calm them down if they are upset about one thing or another and it is great for colicky babies. And if you are pregnant or newly post-partum, rubbing this on your own feet or wrists will help you eliminate the normal pregnant or new-mom anxiety.
