M+BL’s Food Philosophy: How to Eat Really Well, Really

It’s taken me a long time to get to where I am food wise. I started on my health journey when I was about 18 and have been passionate about learning what healthy means and how to cook ever since. Through lots of trial and errors I have finally come to the place where I feel pretty healthy. There is still some work to be done, I still revert to bad eating habits when I am really having a hard time (like my miscarriage last year, or when my dog died this year). I do feel like I need to have a period of being 100% grain free and dairy free to heal my digestive lining even more, but on the whole, I eat very moderately.

I don’t subscribe strictly to one style of eating, such as Paleo, Whole30, Weston A. Price, etc.  I combine bits and pieces from several food philosophies that are grounded in good science. I do this because I want to keep my stress level about food down. I don’t want to be stressing over every meal about whether or not it perfectly adhered to some philosophy about what is healthy.  And I want freedom.  As I mentioned in some of my 7 Day Cleanse videos, I do not do well with people telling me what to do.  The second someone tries to force me to do something, I buck. So allowing myself plenty of wiggle room, aka the 80/20 rule, makes eating healthy a vast majority of the time actually attainable.

As well as eating healthy and providing my body with good fuel and a good foundation, how I eat also matters to the environment.  I choose to eat in a way that is not only good for my body, but good for the earth. The 80/20 rule applies here as well.  We eat out at chain restaurants. Hell, even fast food restaurants on rare occasions, and I don’t always eat food that is in season. But as a general rule, I stick to foods that are local and in season.

And in the end, I just do the best I can.  I firmly believe that an imperfect attempt at healthy eating is better than being perfect.  That making mistakes and falling off the healthy food wagon and ending up with cooking disasters is better than never trying.  I keep moving my feet in the right direction, I keep getting back up and trying to do better.  I keep showing up and doing the best I can, and that’s all you need to do, too.

Changing your diet and your lifestyle are hard things to do.  Patterns and habits are deep-seated, and it can take a long time to break the cycle. I love the old Zen saying of fall down 7 times, get up 8 times. Same thing with food. Just keep getting up.

As long as we strive to make it a habit MOST of the time, we’re doing a lot better than many others! I would love to see a ‘day in the life’ of your meals/snacks/desserts.   3. Needed to read this! I was stuck on the Paleo thing since last summer. But wasn’t happy, again! Kinda the same with being vegan (yeeears ago), I wasn’t happy. If I screwed up, I was so mad at myself. Eating shouldn’t be about screwing up!

    But right now, I am right where you are (I think, or at least comparing myself to this post). I eat sourdough bread and white jasmine rice. I am enjoying life and loving my food.

    FYI – do you by chance know why the WAPF website says to avoid white rice?

    • Hey Angela! Thanks for your sweet comment! I am not sure why WAPF says no white rice, because in the book Cure Tooth Decay, the author actually says that white rice surprisingly is the healthiest because it has the lowest amount of phytic acid in it.
