Link Love 2.22.13

Hiya!

Let’s get started with some fabulous hair.

I am totally obsessed with Downton Abbey!  I just finished season 2 and I am about devour season 3 while it is still free online (till March 3rd)

A lot of people think pit bulls (like my dear departed Sky) are dangerous. Here’s why it’s just not true.

This is what dying people think about.

Sometimes, breast-feeding just isn’t possible.

But when it is, it should be easy and acceptable.

Indian activists fight for women’s rights of a different kind.

I wish I had taken a picture of my deep freezer when it was full with Penelope’s milk!  It looked like this, except mine was much more organized and in neat stacks. :)

I am in the market for a new blender, and I have been longing for a VitaMix for years (you know, since my blender is a piece of shit), but is it all hype?  Anyone have some blender recommendations?

I have been organizing books this week, and this a favorite.

I am going to be offering a 24 hour flash sale on my cookbooks, but ONLY email newsletter subscribers will get the code, so sign up!!

Here’s what I have been up to on Instagram (MamaAndBabyLove).  I am SO close to 1000 fans, if you are not following me yet, will you?!  Thanks!

So glad I snapped one last picture of my Japanese Magnolia tree. These trees are about 7 years old, and they have only been blooming the last couple of years. They really put on a show this year. As if to say goodbye, since we are moving to South Florida in a few short months.

Every year my husband and I write a little love letter to our daughter, Penelope. We both write down all the things she is doing and into that we love. This is our 4th Valentine’s with Penelope and already I enjoy going back over and reading our letters to her.

  1. Thanks for the link! :)

  2. Thanks for hosting Stephanie :-) This morning I’m sharing my little learning experiment called The Granny Plan. Everyone is welcome to join me for this 12 week series where every week we’ll be working on a new real food routine for our kitchens … it’s gonna be a lot of fun! I’m also sharing the third part of my series What Makes a Diet Good? Have a great week :-)

  3. Hi – I am writing in response to you asking if the Vitamix is just all hype. I personally don’t think so. If I had to choose only one kitchen appliance (including dishwasher, stove, etc.) to live with, I’d pick my vitamix over all the above. (sorry crock pot!) I bought it about 7 yrs ago and it’s still used 3-4 times a day. Not exaggerating. It makes smoothies so smooth and silky. I’ve done the same smoothies in other blenders and it’s a completely different smoothie. I don’t think I could down all the veggies I put in my vitamix if it was done in another blender.

I would suggest buying directly from vitamix.com or over the phone with their 800 number. When I did research 7 yrs ago, that was suggested for warranty reasons. The factory is in Ohio and they’ll pay for shipping if it needs to go back to be fixed for any reason. I was told that wasn’t the case if I bought from a different retailer. But that could be all different as it was 7 yrs ago.

I have the 5200 and it looks so different from the newer updated versions. And I would also suggest one with 2 switches and 1 dial versus the ones with all these buttons now. But who am I! Good Luck!

ps – we just bought a Berkey. So actually, I think I’d choose my Berkey over the Vitamix! Loving the Berkey. But vitamix is #2, then the dishwasher!

  4. Hi Stephanie, I’ve been a reader for a while now but I just started a blog myself and posted my link above about healthy homemade fruit snacks, which seems like something you and your readers would appreciate! Thanks for the link up!

  5. I’m not sure about the vitamix, but I’d love to hear what other readers think. We have a kitchen aid blender and it works great. One round for almost anything gets the job done.
I left a link for a recent blog post on why your birth story DOES matter. My son is approaching his 2nd birthday, and I am deeply affected by my traumatic birth. Hoping to remind people that no matter your feelings surrounding your birth experience, they are valid and important!

    • Good to know about Kitchen Aid. I would love to find a review of someone who has tried them all. Thanks for sharing your post. Have you read any books by Pam England? Her trainings have a big enphasis on helping women heal birth trauma.

  6. LOVE my Vitamix. I wondered too about whether or not they we’re mostly hype. I think my first reaction was “$400 for a blender? How stupid do you think I am?” But now after owning one for two years, I think it was worth every penny. We use it at least twice every single day. Honestly, though, it may be that I became so committed to green smoothies BECAUSE I had spent so much for the blender. It is very powerful. (I have once burnt up the motor on a Bosch blender. Never feel like I’m straining my Vitamix.). They also have GREAT customer service. They once replaced a part FOR FREE. even after I admitted that I broke it by dropping it.
Can’t say enough good stuff about Vitamix.
FYI- just found young blog this week. Love it.

  7. I have a Kitchenaid blender and love it! Really durable & easy to use.

Love the idea of love letters to your daughter–I have a four week old and my husband wrote her a letter at birth to give to her on her 18th birthday. I think it’s a beautiful gift for a child.

Also love the breast feeding articles! As a new breast feeding mom I am still getting used to nursing in public and it was a good read.

  8. I wrote about what I call the “Sacrifice Myth” in relation to my being a working mother and how it’s just not true (in my case) that I would be able to be a stay at home mom if I was just “willing to sacrifice a little” which is something I’ve been told on numerous occasions.

  9. Thanks, I linked my Days of the Week Calendar…except I screwed up on #11 and put my name instead of the name of the blog post :(

  10. Stephanie, I linked a post I wrote on the vitamix above. If you are considering one, I thought you might want to read about why I love mine so much. It is the best!! Go for it! You will not regret the decision as a green/healthy mom.

  11. Stephanie – what blender did you end up getting? I am searching for a blender and a juicer right now. Any recommendations?

    thanks!!
