Toddler Tutu Tutorial

I made my Sweet Pea and her friends some tutus recently.  She is a dancing fool and obsessed with all things tutus.

I had heard these tutus were very easy to make and I thought I would give them a whirl.  And, by golly, they are easy.  I love crafts that don’t require a lot of mental attention and I can catch up on TV at the same time.  Ever the overachiever, it’s not good enough to just make a tutu, I need to multitask and make a tutu while doing something else to feel good about myself.

There are about 5 million, ba-50-jillion tutorials online about how to make these.  I am not going to even waste my time trying to recreate the wheel.  But I did look at many tutorials while prepping for this project and I think this , this and this are good ones.  If you have found the holy grail of tulle tutu tutorials, please let me know and I will update my links.

One tip I will mention that I didn’t see in a lot of tutorials is using an 8×11 folder to cut your strips.  Wrap the tulle around the folder, until it’s all used up and then cut through one end.  You have all your strips in about 2 minutes.   So each strip was about 22 inches long and the width of your roll of tulle.

I made a tutu for Penelope and several for her friends.  They are perfect easy and affordable DIY birthday gifts for toddlers.

I had some tulle left over and sock monkey was surprised with his very own tutu, much to Penelope’s delight.

  2. Sooo adorable. Can’t wait till Lucy starts ballet in a year! I am so making her one of these when ballerina fever strikes…

  3. My daughter only wore tutus and sparkly shoes till she was at least 6. Nothing else would do. And Sock Monkey rocks that tutu!

  4. I love the folder tip! That would save a lot of time. With 2 girls, we do a lot of tutu’s here!

  5. Hello! I just happened upon your site and this tutorial, in search of tutu tutes. Where did you get your tulle? I am looking for the sparkle/sequin type of tulle and having at tough time sourcing it!

  6. I just made the base of mines after I read your blog. My daughter is turning 2 next weekend and I wanted to make it just for that. Only thing, maybe you should have mentioned what the width of the tulle roll was. I bought mines by the yard that came on some big reams. I cut them at 6″ though. Think I’ll add some ribbons so hers can have a little oomph. This is so adorable. Thanks a lot. :)
