Mindful Organizing


Recently, I have been in the mood to take the organization in my kitchen to the next level.   I cleaned out my pantry, spice cabinet and utensil drawer.

This drawer was particularly bothersome.  It got to the point where I couldn’t even get the drawer closed.  Crap was everywhere.  It was overstuffed, crowded and chaotic.

Every time I went to get something out of the drawer I tensed up.

But then I bought a drawer divider and put things in their place.

Ahhhh, much better now.

I needed more room, so I decided to take out all of my wooden spoons and put them in a clay mug on my counter.   I think I might do something like this with them, but I am not sure yet.  Is rainbow wooden spoons too much?

But on to the real point of this post.

I organize my house, when I want to organize my mind and heart.

When things need to be moved, rearragned, thrown out in my soul, I do the same in my house.

The process is one and the same for me.

As I am cleaning out the junk in my drawer, my soul is simultaneously cleaning out the junk in my mind.

I 100% believe that the state of your house, directly correlates to the state of your mind.

And I just like to see things all lined up in a row.  I am a Mindful Mama, but oh yes, I am a wee bit OCD too.  :)

P.S.  Are you sick of my iPhone pictures yet?  I can’t help myself, they make me feel so cool!

  1. Absolutely. Organizing is my stress reliever. Especially when I have decisions to make…I feel that my mind & soul are clearer, more open to direction. But maybe its just my OCD too haha!

    Ps, I wish I had found your blog long before now. Finding someone who has a similar parenting style & “hippie ways” who provides so much information has been invaluable to me! Thank you for being so open :)

    • I love that you do it before making decisions! What a great way to make sure you are connected to your true self before you make any decisions that may or may not be in your best interest. Well, I am glad you are here now! I have so many more things to do and share!

    Been waiting for you to post this. I love the pictures. Not sure if my mom passed the habit onto me or it’s just like you said, but every single time I get angry or riled up about something, I start cleaning. Always used to know my mom was pissed off because she’d be slamming cups into the dishwasher and vigorously scrubbing counters. And when you have a kid who destroys everything within 5 minutes of cleaning up, it matches your mental state as a mother! Always having to reclean and fix up, always feel like you’re barely holding it together. It’s a great metaphor.

    • LOL. I always wonder what you think of my process of putting posts together, if you them at the beginning or middle. I agree, it is a great metaphor.

  3. When I am stressed, anxious or mad I clean. I purge and toss and dump. I think it is healthy way to deal right?

    I love those baskets with the handles!!

    • I think so! I do have to watch myself and keep it in balance though, and you may find you will need to do that too. I used to have a very difficult time when anything was out of place, like full on anxiety, panic attacks. Like I needed the house to perfect to even function properly. But I have loosen up tremendously since Penelope arrived.

  5. I love the correlation you are making here. We are currently in the process of overhauling and organizing our lives and home. My husband was sick for almost 3 years (and I had 3 babies in those 3 years), and there were so many things that got left undone. Now we are, while life moves on, trying to catch up on all of the undone, unorganized things in our minds, hearts, and home.

    I love organizing as a stress reliever. What would you suggest for a very deep utensil drawer that is out of control! I was think about double layering the organizers, but it think that might be tedious trying to get things out of the bottom. Thoughts?

  7. this post hit home. I have been feeling this to my core. I’m dedicating this weekend to deep cleaning & organizing. when our house is unorganized, I feel stuck. like I can’t plan or organize any other part of my life – work, financially, blogging, nothing. it’s been a year since ruby (my daughter was born & I’m finally feeling like I’m getting a handle on something of an organized life again. so thanks for sharing this post. your drawers and pantry look great! and I love those rainbow spoons. :)

    • You just reminded me something I wanted to add in the original post! I also tend to clean out, organize and de-clutter when I want to attract something new into my life. This helps to energetically get rid of the baggage to make room for something new!

  8. Thanks for this!!! I’ve been wanting to re-organize my kitchen (I use it a lot so it gets messy really easily) and you gave me some great ideas. I organize and clean to de-stress and clear my mind as much as to de-clutter and clear physical spaces. But I also clean and organize if I start to feel impatient, unsettled or like I need a change. I think the same way some people say that a change can be as good as a vacation, I think cleaning can be as good as a change :)

  9. I concur! If your drawers/ closets are cluttered chances are your mind and life are not flowing the way you would like. I also think that the iPhone pictures rock! :)

  10. oh i am so ocd when it comes to my kitchen. And i have been wanting to dip my cheap silver wear handles in paint as well as my wooden spoons i think it is so cool!

    • Oh my gosh, I didn’t think of that! I also have cheap silver wear from Target, I could do that too. Oh, I feel a DIY Saturday coming on very soon, thanks for the inspiration!

  11. Great post! I’m going through the same thing right now as a lot of the commenters. I have been sick for over 2 years now and am still not doing the best, but enough is enough. We are moving and I don’t want to take all of the unfinished projects and heaps of junk with me. I also have a burning question: Where did you find those baskets with handles?? They look like the perfect tool! :)

    • I got those at the Container Store! It was one of the cheapest pantry organizer they had there. $3 each. Hope you are feeling better very soon!

  12. I love what you said about the state of our home and the state of our minds. i otally believe this too. it is happening to me now. I have been so stressed and just out of sorts these past few days. I am trying to organize things in my pantry/office but I just do not know where to start. It is a total mess with not enough space. It doesn’t stop there. It is bleading out into the hallway. I tell my husband that I need a profesional organizer to come in and help me get this all straight. I want to have a place for everything and have everything in its place. Oh how that would make me so happy. You wouldn’t happen to want to come to maine for a few days would you? LOL! ;)

    • Professional organizer is my fantasy job. I think maybe when I am old woman, I will be a midwife/organizer. I will deliver babies and then help all the new moms get their homes in order!

      I would just say start someplace very small. Maybe its just one section, of one shelf in your pantry and then build from there. My organization is constantly changing and growing. I just do a little bit at a time. Good luck!

    When my father died a little over a year ago, his kids had to spend a few days cleaning out his apartment. He lived in a two-bedroom place that no one was ever allowed into— for good reason, as it turns out, since he had so much junk crammed into that place that there were towering piles with little trails wending their way through the rooms. It wasn’t trash, for the most part; we took many, many loads of usable things to the thrift store for donation. It was just that my father never discarded anything. He had at least two of everything in existence, I think. He had receipts from things that wore out after twenty years of use— twenty years before he died. When his kids got back to our respective homes after the funeral, every one of us spent a few days cleaning and organizing our own homes— not just because we didn’t want to end up like Dad, living with so many towering piles, but because losing someone we loved made us reevaluate our selves and do some spring cleaning of the soul, and cleaning our homes felt like part of the process. Your post reminded me of that, and of how bittersweet it was for me to look around at my newly pared-down and organized home and think that in an odd way, it was a monument to my father.
