I did a little crafting last week to lift my spirits a bit and to get into a mediative state. I think its pretty interesting how repetitive movements can pull you into a trance or quiet, still place without even trying. When I sit and mediate, it takes forever to my mind to settle. My mind is like a puppy who just can’t sit still! But when I am sewing or crafting, I seem to slip into that place without any real effort at all.
For each holiday, I am limiting myself to one holiday craft. I get so overwhelmed by Pinterest, I want to make everything that I see. But if I limit myself to one holiday craft, I enjoy the craft and the holiday more.
Last year I made this (and this and this, see why I needed to tone it down?!) bag to hold Penelope’s Valentine’s Day gifts. I got the idea for the treat bag from Pottery Barn and used this tutorial for the flower. I love how the flower came out, and could imagine all sorts of other projects with them, but it was very, very time consuming.
For my heart garland, I made a trip to Micheals to buy some felt. They honestly do not have the best selection of felt. It is not soft and the colors are pretty ho-hum. Although, I may just be ruined after buying my Heather Bailey bamboo felt last year, nothing quite compares to working with that.
I settled on hot pink, light pink and gray.
I cut out 8 large hearts, 8 medium hearts and 8 small hearts.
For the large hearts I went to google and printed out a heart shape that I liked. For the smaller two I just hand drew the hearts.
Then I pinned the medium to the large, and the small to the medium and sewed along the inside rim of each heart.
This felt was nice and stiff, so their was no need for a type of stabilizer fabric.
Then I sewed each one to the next and made a garland out of the hearts.
I hung it up in my kitchen and looking at it makes me happy!
Pretty easy right? What felt crafts did you do this year?
