Babywearing Call to Action!

(this is a picture of Penelope’s very first ride in a carrier, 4 days old!)

Usually today is a yoga tutorial post, but there are many pressing things going on this week that need attention.  One is a food policy issue and the other is a babywearing issue.   Please read this post about the babywearing issue and take action.  We need you to spread the word about the recall and call your representatives.

It’s bad enough that my friend almost got arrested for wearing her baby in a carrier on a recent Delta flight, but can you imagine life without the right to carry your baby?

It makes me SO FREAKING MAD, that the Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks that the actual slings are the problem. When, hello, people have been wearing their babies since THE BEGINNING OF TIME.

Please check out this post on the TheBabyWearer.com’s Facebook page to learn more about what is going on.

(these are some of my friends, we all like to wear our babies!)

Babywearing is something near and dear to my heart.  Check out my article in the current edition of Rythm of the Home, for more of why I love babywearing.  It’s an article about my trip to Morocco and how the Mama’s wear their babies in that country.

I have been babywearing for 5 plus years now.  I was Nanny for several years, before I became a mother, to two little girls-sisters. Each were just a few weeks old when I started caring for them, and wearing them.  And now a mother myself, I have an arsenal of slings that get used on a daily basis.

(family picture after a wonderful walk on the beach together, Penelope is about 6 months here)

These are the slings in my collection.  They all have different uses and purposes.  They are not in any order of favorites, I just typed as the name came to me.

Ella Roo Wrap
Ella Roo Mei Tai
Ella Roo Mei Hip
two Maya Wraps-one with padding and one older style without padding
Hot Sling
New Native Sling
Moby wrap
Petunia Pickle Bottom Sojourn Carrier
Petunia Pickle Bottom TourGuide Carrier
Taylor Made Mesh Sling (for use in the pool or shower, or very hot locals)
Pathfinder Backpack Carrier

and I have an Ergo and a Sakura Bloom Ring Sling on my wish list!

Wearing my daughter is a life savor for so many different reasons.  It enables me to get more things done around the house and helps me have a stronger bond with her.  I can’t really explain it, but there is nothing like it in the world, when you have a baby snuggled up on your chest in a wrap or sling.  You feel their heartbeat and know they feel yours.  Walking around with a baby in a carrier gives me and my daughter the deep, eternal feeling that all is right with world because your baby feels unconditionally loved by the action of being held and being worn, as mothers and babies have been doing since the beginning of time.

(even Grandpa’s can babywear!)

  1. You said better than I ever could!!! Babywearing is a life saver, something I didn't know about when my oldest was born (9 years ago Friday!) but have LOVED with my last three babies. I honestly don't know how I functioned before! And Mamas from the beginning of time understood the total benefits – for their babies AND for themselves!!! Like so many things in parenting (life!), proper babywearing is all about education, education, EDUCATION! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hoping your wish for an Ergo comes true soon. We love ours. LOVE.

  3. Reposting!! LOVE!

  4. Stephanie says:

Thanks Erin! I still can't believe it when Mama's say they have four kids! I can't wrap my head around it, bravo to you!

Carolyn, my Ergo wish came true tonight! My friend Maureen picked one up for me at the One Week Boutique for $15!!! So pumped.
And p.s. checked out your blog and blog post "whats in your google reader?" and you made me laugh out loud! Lets have a blind friend date soon and get the babes together!

    Thank Maureen! Your the best!

  5. Adventures In Babywearing says:

OH you have some beautiful carriers! Great post!

  6. Melissa Vines says:

I love babywearing and I have a serious addiction to buying new carriers. I just got an Ergo and can't wait to use it when my baby girl comes this January! Have a lovely weekend!

P.S. Can I just say that seeing a grandfather wearing his grandchild is the sweetest thing I've seen in a long time! My mom used to wear my son all the time but never my dad. I think I'm going to have to encourage it this time around!

  7. Stephanie says:

Hey Melissa! I just got an Ergo too, can't wait to really try it out! Congrats on your baby girl, coming this January! She will be a Capricorn like me!
My dad was so excited to wear her in my sling. He took her on several walks like that and he was very proud of himself!

  8. Naturally Attached says:

I am right there with ya, Momma! I am in love with my sling. I have a Sakura Bloom and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! My son is over a year now and it still gets used everyday. My husband loves using it as well. He always offers to be the one to hold him. :) I wish I would see more Moms & Dads wearing their babies.

  9. Stephanie says:

@Naturally Attached…That is so sweet your husband likes to sling your son! My husband prefered me to get him set up in the wrap. I love that he is willing to wear our daughter, I just wish he would figure out how to do it himself!!

  10. Samantha Shaw says:

I have a question for ya :) My daughter is 18 months and we have never had her in a sling or anything because I was always too scared to. Is it too late to start? We let her walk some in the mall and stores, but her little legs can only go for so long and we end up carrying her. She weighs 26 lbs now. If its not too late to start carrying her, which wrap or carrier would you recommend?

  11. Stephanie, since you have so many models…which one would you recommend for either myself or my husband (5′ and 6′-2″) to wear while hiking/outdoors with our 19month old son who is about 25lbs? I looked up that pathfinder one but they are out of stock on Amazon…that one seemed like a perfect fit! Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
