Lactation Cookies

lactation cookies

I made Lactation Cookies last night.  My supply is still bountiful, thank God, so I didn’t make them to boost supply, but because I was craving some yummy cookies.  And I figured I may as well make some lactation cookies, because the way I see it, you can never have too much mommy milk!  I also like to make these, because Peter tends to steer clear from them, because God forbid he get caught eating a lactation cookie, leaving the yummy bounty all to myself.

Speaking of mommy milk, yesterday I had the awesome pleasure of nursing Penelope in a room full of 2 and 3 year old’s, while I was teaching yoga.  The little boys were so cute. The stopped cold from doing yoga and came over to peer and asked “What’s that?”  “Whatcha doing?” “What dat baby doin?”  “What is IN there??”  Why mommy milk of course!  And amazingly Penelope sat there and nursed for the longest time she has ever nursed in public.  It happened at the end of an hour of us teaching yoga to  about 30 rambunctious toddlers and she was so overwhelmed she didn’t give a crap that we were not laying down with the lights off and the sound machine on!

But I digress, below is the recipe I used, or you can find it here.  A sweet friend of mine brought me this recipe when Penelope was one week old (along with a great book called Making More Milk and an SNS).  I also had some awesome friends bring me lacation cookies they made I so I didn’t have to.   This is the perfect desert to add to a post partum dinner delivery!

Oh and if you are not in the mood to bake, I found this great site where you can order Lactation Cookies and they will ship them to you!

  1. I don't need to lactate, lol, but those are some of the best looking cookies I've seen in a while! :)

  2. Any thoughts on how to make these sugar free?

  3. Hi,This might be a silly question but I’ve never tried using brewers or nutritional yeast before and can’t find a powdered form locally but I can get it in tablet form. Do you know if it’s the same thing? Can I crush up the tablets to use?

  4. I am so excited to have found your website and this recipe. I can’t wait to try it and the slow cooker/freezer meals. I am also looking forward to exploring the rest of your site! However, I ended up on the Lactation Cookie page when I clicked the link to “January Freezer Meals.” I tried it twice more and the same thing happened. Can you help? I would like to see what your January Freezer Meal post is about. Thanks!

    • Thanks for letting me know! I will fix the January Freezer Meal link right now, I recently moved over to WordPRess and things got very wonky and still are for the time being.

  5. I have never heard of lactation cookies but these look amazing. Do they really help with milk production? I’m due in a few months and would love as much production as I can get!
    Thank you!!

  6. I stumbled across your website while i was researching ways to increase my milk supply.. i have been taking fenugreek and drinking mother’s milk tea. will these cookies help a little as well??

when my baby was born, he wouldn’t nurse right away. he ended up having to go to the special care nursery the day after he was born and he stiltl wouldn’t nurse. they ended up giving him bottles with formula after giving him the colustrum i was able to pump. they said to continue to try to nurse/pump out some milk and then supplement with formula after. they never really said if i should stop supplementing with formula or what to do. my baby, now 6 weeks old, finally nurses (yay!!) but even after i nurse him for a good bit, he is still starving and i am still supplementing with either a little bit of milk i’ve pumped or formula. he is growing well (obvioulsly, getting all that extra formula) and is in the 50th percentile for height/weight. i’d really like to just exclusively breastfeed AND be able to store breastmilk in the freezer so he has fresh mommy milk for while i’m at work, which i started back this time.

i am trying to eat more, but i’m just exhausted of always stuffing my face! any other suggestions or comments? does it just take more patience?

    • Have you read my post on how to increase your milk supply? There is a ton of great info in that post. Also, you may want to looking a supplemental feeder system. It will help him become more efficient at getting milk out of the boob, thus filling him up more and not needing a bottle afterwards.
They are very smart little buggers, so the sooner you can get rid of the bottle the better, they know it is easier and sometimes will end up refusing your breast. I am actually about to sell my Lact Aid and my Starter SNS if you are interested.
